Empire State Building History
The Empire State Building was built between 1930 and 1931, in the midst of the Depression. At the heart of the project was a competition between John Jakob Raskob (General Motors) and Walter Chrysler (Chrysler Corp.) to see who could build the tallest building. The building was owned by Raskob’s company, Empire State, Inc. The construction project required a work force of roughly 3,000 men. The Empire State Building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
